Shrimp City - December films

Before we talk you through our December films, we like to present to you.. Pony People's favorite film of 2011!

We didn't need much time to decide which film to choose. Melancholia (by Lars von Trier) was for the both of us by far the best film of 2011. It was so beautifully filmed (with many shots looking like perfect paintings) and had such an amazing atmosphere. It was the kind of film that lifts you up and takes you in, and leaves you feeling like you just went on an amazing journey. We loved it! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

[REC] (2007): Another one of those handycam movies. I rather liked it but I wasn't blown away by it or anything.
♥ ♥ ♥

Princess Mononoke (1997): Everybody loves Ghibli movies. This isn't my favorite but I do like it a lot, especially the forest spirits. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Stand By Me (1986): This movie ranks very high in my top ten of favorite movies of all time. The book was somewhat better but I love the movie almost just as much. EVERYBODY should see this movie (but read the book first). ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 (2010): This (and part 2) is my favorite Harry Potter movie! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 (2011): This (and part 1) is my favorite Harry Potter movie! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

The Ring (2002): I like the Ring. There, I said it. I guess it has some sort of sentimental value because I used to watch it a lot when it just came out. ♥ ♥ ♥

The Ninth Gate (1999): This isn't an amazing film but I have always been very intrigued by witchcraft and satanism and Johnny Depp is a babe. ♥ ♥ ♥

Wild Wild West (1999): Ha! This is a guilty pleasure. When I was about 11/12 years old I was a huge Will Smith fan (no really, I had a shitload of pictures of him hanging on my wall and did nothing but listen to his stupid music and watch the Fresh Prince and Men In Black) and then this movie came out. I may have watched it over 50 times and I can't help but love it. I still watch almost every Will Smith movie and I also still find him a total fox, sorry.
♥ ♥ ♥

The Tommyknockers (1993): Okay. So. I love Stephen King, as you probably know by now. I recently read this book and I enjoyed it SO much I didn't think any movie could ruin that feeling. BUT. THIS WAS SO BAD. They left out aaaallll the awesome stuff, shuffled the entire story around a bit (why the hell not), changed the ending and raaaahhh!!! So lame. Plus that flippin' Jimmy Smits/Miguel Prado played the lead role (very badly) and I was just rewatching Dexter's season 3 at that time so it was very confusing and just blah. Sucked. You may like it if you haven't read the book though. The overall story is pretty good. ♥ ♥

The Body Snatcher (1945): This movie has such an eerie feel to it, I loved it. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Four Rooms (1995): WHY DIDN'T I WATCH THIS MOVIE BEFORE!?! Sooo goodd! Amazing concept and Tim Roth is just AWESOME. Watch this!!! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Atonement (2007): Hah. I really don't want to write about this! It's a long story but I'll try to cut it short; Atonement is my friend Merlin's favorite movie. She told me to watch it many many MANY times and I just sort of kept putting it off (as I'd rather watch stupid horror movies). In the meanwhile, my other friend Mirjam (yes, that one) watched it and told me she HATED it SO much. Haha! I became some sort of 'thing' between Merlin and Mirjam and I dreaded watching it even more. A few weeks(months?) later I watched it with Merlin because I just couldn't put it off any longer. I tried to look at it in a totally unbiased way but I'm not completely sure I did because Merlin wanted me to like it SO MUCH. I guess I did like it, it's filmed in a way I haven't seen before and it was one of those films which are almost like a moving painting and the acting was very good. But, I'm not a beautiful-lovestory-kinda-girl. If you are, I'm sure you will REALLY love this film. ♥ ♥ ♥

Antichrist (2009): SO GOOD!!! Not many films grab me by the throat like Lars Von Trier films do. Pure (yet very disturbing) art. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

The Toxic Avenger (1984): Hahaha. This movie. So funny, so weird, so sadistic, so silly, so horribly cliché (in a good way), such an awesome story and did I mention the 80's synthesizer music?! If you're into comedy horror; WATCH THIS! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Jumanji (1995): My favorite childhood movie! My mom walked in when I was watching this and she was like "THAT MOVIE?! AGAIN?! HAVEN'T YOU SEEN IT ENOUGH BY NOW?!", totally cracked me up. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Horton Hears A Who! (2008): Ilse told me to watch this movie so I did! It was so much nicer than I'd thought, I loved it! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Breakfast On Pluto (2005): A very intriguing story about a transgender boy's search for his mother. Very strange but nice film. ♥ ♥ ♥

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989): Gotta watch this on christmas eve. ♥ ♥ ♥

Home Alone (1990): No Home Alone, no christmas! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Home Alone 2: Alone In New York (1992): No Home Alone, no christmas! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Mickey's Christmas Carol (1983): My favorite adaption of the Charles Dickens Christmas Carol. Used to watch this the whole year round as a kid and watched it twice this christmas. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

The Small One (1978): My mom used to read me this story when I was little. It's a sad sad story but so beautifully drawn and it has a great message. It actually made me cry (movies never do). ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Gremlins (1984): Gremliiiinssss!!!! Don't feed him after midnight! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

The Witches of Eastwick (1987): I'm not sure why I like this movie so much. I guess it's because it's just so deliciously cheesy. And I like witches. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Dead Alive A.K.A. Braindead (1992): I LOVE GORY COMEDY HORROR!!! And when I say gore, I mean Gore. This and the Evil Dead trilogy are my favorite horror movies of all time and I will never get enough of these. So so funny and just flippin' brilliant. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

The Hills Have Eyes (1977): I may actually like the remake better. Pretty alright though. ♥ ♥ ♥

Cube (1997): Great NYE film. Have seen this so many times but it's still just as awesome. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

You don't have to watch these: The Skeleton Key, The Strangers, All The Boys Love Mandy Lane, Paranormal Activity 2, Paranormal Activity 3

Elephant (2003): I'm rewatching some of Gus van Sants more arty films, and starting to like them more and more. Loved the sound in this one. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

The Dark Crystal (1982): This film, seriously. Why have I not watched this before? The story, the details, all the amazing creatures, the music!! So good. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Resident Evil (2002): Some awesome killing scenes, but with the zombies and the A.I. and the sci-fi stuff this had the potential to be so much better than it actually was. ♥ ♥ ♥

Life of Brian (1979): Probably the millionst time I've seen this, but I still find it ridiculously hilarious. ♥ ♥ ♥

We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011): Don't really know what to say about this film. The story was very unrealistic and over the top (to me) and the symbolism way too obvious, but still the grim atmosphere of the film made some very heavy impact on me. Interesting. (and: Ezra Miller is seriously hot imo) ♥ ♥

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011): Really liked the way this story was told (slow and with amazing tension all the way) but felt that some characters lacked depth, which made the film much less impressive than it could have been. ♥ ♥ ♥

Calendar Girls (2003): Just a simple little film, not very good but still entertaining. ♥ ♥ ♥

Metropolis (1927): Had seen parts of this film, but not the entire film yet. I absolutely loved it. Classic sci-fi, and I just love German expressionism <3 Gorgeous! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Ponyo (2008):When sad, always watch a Ghibli film. I loved this one, especially the underwater-world. So beautiful! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Cube (1997): Watched this with Anne & my husband on NYE. Classic film, awesome concept and some great killing scenes! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Oh, and you don't have to watch Bright Young Things (2003), such a disappointment by Stephen Fry :(
